The spreader is the most basic and commonly used de-icing tool. Many spreaders require the user to go over the icy surfaces to apply the de-icing materials. Hand spreaders (pictured above) require the user to walk all over the entire desired surface area while continuously shaking their device. This task is dangerous because the user is walking over an icy area while being fatigued by shaking their device. There is a risk of slipping and exhausting the arm when using these manual hand spreaders.

The push spreader is an improvement over the hand spreader because it uses the movement from the wheels to dispense the de-icing materials. Although this product reduces strain on the arms, the user will still have to go over the icy area.

Both the hand spreader and push spreaders are very simple devices that properly dispense de-icing materials, but it requires human labor while placing the user in dangerous conditions. Many consumers are discouraged from using these devices because they don't want to slip and injure themselves.
